In this little corner of Yorkshire/Lancashire known as Saddleworth, they still celebrate the holiday known as Wakes Week, and Whitsuntide. Traditionally this is done by having brass band contests and a Whit Friday parade through the surrounding villages. Yesterday I went to the Diggle band contest which had bands from places as far as Switzerland playing.
Today is the Beer Walk, a traditional fancy dress walk that goes between designated pubs in each village in a circuit. Currently there are about 300 people in different costumes and varying states of sobriety. There’s a group of police keeping an eye on things, but amongst the other groups of people they could easily blend in as contestants!
